Crown Dependency and has a unique international identity.

Strategically located between France and England, Jersey
has long been a place of importance. Settlements have been
found from both the Bronze and Iron Ages. There is some
evidence suggesting Roman influence as well. Over the years
many people in power have used Jersey as a staging ground
for a variety of endeavors.
One of the most notable military experiences that Jersey
witnessed was their occupation by the Nazis during the
Second World War. Jersey was the only plot of British soil
to be attacked and occupied by the German forces. For 5
years, this island was oppressed and some of the scars
are still visible. One of the most notorious historical
sites on Jersey is the German Underground Hospital. This
massive subterranean fortress was created just before D-Day
to be an impenetrable fortress. It is an impressive and
very advanced feat of architecture that truly brings home
the reality of the past.
If you are in Jersey the second Thursday of August, prepare
yourself for an incredible carnival. The Jersey Battle
of Flowers was initiated in 1902 for the coronation of
Edward VII. The parade and carnival have changed over the
years but it was named by the dismantling of the floats
at the end, and fighting each other with the floral ammunition
gathered. Although this aspect has been lost, the parade
is still a spectacle to behold. The Battle of Flowers museum
is dedicated to this event and has more information and
history. Jersey offers many other museums to explore as
well. They have a fascinating Maritime Museum, the Jersey
Museum, and Hamptonne Country Life Museums are just a few.
